Tommy Douglas
Weyburn, Saskatchewan - The late Tommy Douglas, former Premier of Saskchewan, grandfather of ’24’ star Kiefer Sutherland and father-in-law of actor Donald Sutherland, is credited with bringing us our universal health care system: the first such system in North America. The Scottish-born minister from Calvery Baptist Church in Weyburn, Saskatchewan was elected in the 1940’s, and lead the first socialist government in North America. He’s credited with saying: “I was a printer and then I became a preacher, then I became a politician, and then I became a Premier. And that is the true descent of man.”
