The written form of Inukitut was created from Pitman shorthand

Iqaluit, Nunavut - Travel to Nunuvut and you may notice that the written form of the Inuit language, Inukitut, looks strange, but oddly familiar. Until 1984 the Inuit of Canada had no written form of their language. Edmund Peck is credited with introducing this system of writing, which was derived from the Pitman shorthand. The concept wasn't new. It was modified from syllabary that had been introduced to the Cree and Ojibwe between 1840 and 1860 by James Evans, a Wesleyan missionary. It is only used in Canada.
