St. John's, Newfoundland - Signal Hill, overlooking the city of St. John's, is where the first transatlantic wireless radio transmission was received by Guglielmo Marconi, on Dec. 12, 1901 (Historica video). The three dot message signal (morse code for the letter 'S') was transmitted from Poldhu, Cornwall, England. Marconi had a receiver wired to a kite that was flying 120 metres (400 feet) in the air. You can see and exhibit of the event in Signal Hill's Cabot Tower. The Tower was built to celebrate the 400's anniversary of John Cabot's visit to the New World and Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubliee. From the hill, not only do you have a spectacular view of the city, but at times it's possible to spot whales and icebergs. Photo of Cabot Tower, Signal Hill by Lucy Izon. St. John's Webcam. |
