St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador - L'Anse aux Meadows, which is now a National Historic Site, is believed to be the site of the first European settlement in North America - where Leif Eiriksson (son of Eric the Red) established a colony around 1000 A.D. The ruins of this small Viking Village were discovered in 1960 by Norwegian archaeologists Helge and Anne Stine Ingstadin. The site is a peat bog overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The site is 433 km north of Deer Lake and the Trans-Canada Hwy. Follow the road route known as the Viking Trail, which leads through the spectacularly scenic Gros Morne National Park, past small fishing villages, and by points where you may spot icebergs. Today the ruins are covered by grassy mounds, but there is an interpretive center with artifacts, and several of the sod houses have been recreated and staffed with interpreters in period clothing.
