Winnipeg, Manitoba - That 20-cent Australian coin with a platypus on it? If it was minted in 1981, it was probably made here. The Royal Canadian Mint produced 50 million of them that year.
Since its opening in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced coinage for over 74 countries: Centavos for Cuba, Fils for Yemen, Pesos for Columbia, Kroner for Iceland, Rupiah for Indonesia and a thousand-dollar coin for Hong Kong. The Winnipeg production branch of the Royal Canadian Mint is one of the largest and most elaborate minting operations in the world. There are tours with viewing rooms for visitors. |
