Victoria, British Columbia - At the edge of the Pacific Ocean, just 13 km (8 miles) from downtown Victoria, is a 565-acre setting of old growth forest, gardens, etc., known as Hatley Park. Its Canadas largest and most diverse National Historic Site, and the home of Royal Roads University, which is responsible for the parks management including its 40-room Edwardian-style castle. The castle was built in 1908 by former British Columbia Premier and coal baron, James Dunsmuir, then purchased by the Canadian government and used as a military college from 1940 to 1995. At this point Hately Park became the campus for Royal Roads University, which specializes in programs that combine distance education with short residences. Tours of the castle are available to visitors. Hately Park is popular for weddings, motion pictures, conferences, and corporate training.
