Boeing 737 recycled into a dive reef off Vancouver Island
737 Dive Site British Columbia
Chemanius, Vancouver Island - On January 14th, 2006 a 30-metre long Air Canada Boeing 737 was sunk in 26 metres of water about a kilometer off the east coast of Vancouver Island. A project of the non-profit Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia, the plane was sunk to create a new recreational dive site, the eighth such project of the group (the first seven involved sinking ships.) The projects have helped to create some of the best wreck diving in North America.

Where: This site is located off Chemanius, a mill town now known as one of the world's largest outdoor art galleries. It has 36 large murals that depict the region's local history and culture. Chemanius is about an hour’s drive north of Victoria or 30 minutes south from Nanaimo, and has an ocean-side setting accented by towering forests and snow-capped mountains. Visitors can enjoy galleries, cafes, boutiques, antique stores, and its 274-seat theatre. You can follow the yellow footprints around town for a self-guided tour.
