Lake Louise, Alberta - Forty percent of the power used by the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is generated by wind or ‘run-of-river’ electricity. This well-known grand hotel in the heart of the Canadian Rockies has been using ‘Green Power’ (which produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional generation methods) since 1999. Now, many of the other North American properties in the world-famous Fairmont chain are starting to use wind power for their front desk ‘check in’ computers. Power for 249 check-in terminals is being purchased through Pembina Institute, a non-profit environmental organization whose mandate is: encouraging ‘Sustainable energy solutions’. It’s estimated using wind power for the computers will result in a greenhouse gas reduction of almost 100 tonnes over the next year. Lake Louise is located 57 km (35 miles) from Banff, at an elevation of 1,731 m (5,680 ft).
