Canadian Rocky Mountains - Worms that can live their whole lives in ice. No kidding, they exist in the Rocky Mountains. Ice worms spend their entire lives on glaciers, surviving at 0 degrees Centigrade. They can, however, disintrigate if the temperature rises to 5 degrees. The little brownish critters grow up to two centimetres in length, and live on melting snowbanks, surviving by consuming snow algae. They have been found on the western slopes of the Canadain Rocky Mountains. So far, they have not been found near the Columbia Icefield (the most popular stop between Lake Louise and Jasper along the Icefields Parkway.) If you do find one in this area, you are asked to report it to the park staff.
