CANADA COOL APPROVED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA MILLENNIUM PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM - Toronto

Canada Cool's Millennium Competition, a program that encourages young Canadians, aged 18 to 26, to explore their own country and share their experiences, won approval and partial financial support from the federal government's Canada Millennium Partnership Program.

"This competition will provide young people with more opportunities to connect with the Canadian experience and gain a first-hand understanding of the different regions," said the Honourable Herb Gray, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister responsible for the Government of Canada's millennium initiative of which the Canadian Millennium Partnership program is a part.

"Through this program, the federal government is raising awareness about our history, supporting our youth and our arts and culture, sustaining the environment and developing our communities. The federal government is providing $120,119 for this project, through the Canadian Millennium Partnership program (www.millennium.gc.ca), which provides up to one third of eligible costs for millennium activities that fulfil the criteria," added Mr. Gray.

To participate, young Canadians must travel in Canada beyond their own province or territory in summer of 2000, and submit an article and/or photographs to Canada Cool. All entries will be judged by professional travel journalists. Winning entries, in English and French, will be posted on the Canada Cool Internet site (www.canadacool.com), and will be made available to a selection of major publications across the country. There are three grand prizes; two one-week stays with Canadian Pacific Hotels*, one at Le Manoir Richelieu in the Charlevoix region of Quebec and one at the Canadian Pacific resort property of the winner's choice, and a 10-day Canadian Rockies tour with Contiki Holidays. Suppliers for the hundred or so other prizes include VIA Rail Canada, Roots Canada, Outpost Magazine, Lonely Planet Guidebooks, Tourism Victoria and a variety of Canadian backpacker tour companies and publishers. Corporate supporters include Tourism New Brunswick.

The details of the contest will be available on the back of an entertaining map of Canada, which will feature exciting activities, intriguing facts and sites related to Canadian ingenuity. The Canada Cool Internet site will go online in January 2000. Canada Cool Maps will be distributed across the country, through Travel Cuts and Hostelling International, in March 2000.
