Launched in 1998, ORCA FM (88.5) broadcasts whale calls from Robson Bight, in Johnstone Strait, located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. Robson Bight is an ecological reserve where pods of killer whales gather each summer, attracted by salmon. The calls that are broadcast are picked up by an offshore underwater microphone, located in 30 metres of water. The radio signal can be heard within a 15-km radius of the Johnstone Strait radio transmitter and at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre. |
