Narrowest Building @ Lucy Izon
Vancouver, British Columbia – At the corner of Carall and Pender Streets, which is just about a 10-minute walk from Vancouver’s Gastown into Chinatown, you’ll find the building that Ripley has recognized as ‘the narrowest building in the world’. The Sam Kee Building, which houses an insurance company, is an office building that stretches along one streetfront like a regular commercial building. But, when you look closely, it’s only 1.8 metres (about 6 feet) deep! In 1912, Chang Toy, owner of the Sam Kee Company, had the building erected as a response to a wager after the size of the lot had been reduced due to road expropriation. He added bay windows and public baths under the sidewalk to maximize what could be done with the oddly-shaped site. The Sam Kee Building is located at 8 West Pender Street in Vancouver.
