Stratford, Ontario – From Shakespearean works to performances by William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and the Bearnaked Ladies, musical-theatre classics to contemporary Canadian drama, the four-venue Tony-nominated Stratford Festival of Canada is the largest classical repertory threatre on the North American continent (Historica video.) Actors ranging from Alec Guinness and Christopher Plummer to Dame Maggie Smith have taken to the stage here.

Stratford, population about 30,000, is a city on the Avon River in southwestern Ontario – a 2-hour drive from Toronto, 2.5 hours from Buffalo, and 3 hours from Detroit.

One of Stratford’s charms are the swans (24 white and 2 black) that gracefully paddle in the river during he warm months of the year.

Pop sensation Justin Bieber honed his skills by singing on the steps of Stratford’s Avon Theatre. In 2010 the Stratford Tourism Alliance published a tourism map marking his favorite sites.
