Huntsville, Ontario – You never know what budding talent you might be witnessing in the entertainment at a popular summer resort. About 15 years ago, a young Eileen Twain arrived at Deerhurst Resort from Timmins Ontario, having just taken on the responsibility of her three younger siblings after their parents were killed in an automobile accident. Even though Deerhurst was not looking to hire, her auditon was so impressive that she was hired, and spent the next three years polishing her skills in the resort’s ‘Vegas-style’ show. Today we know her
as Shania Twain, one of the top-selling female singers in the world. Shania was married at Deerhurst, and so was her sister. For an NBC prime-time special with Katie Couric (of the Today Show), Shania came with a whole production crew to reminisce. She is still often in the region and in August 2010 she joined the resort’s show cast and sang a song in the lobby bar.
Deerhurst Resort is a year-round 800-acre lakeside property in North Muskoka (2 1/2 hours north of Toronto), just a short drive from Algonquin Park. I worked at Holiday Inn when Eileen just started her singing career and rode with her and the Band into Huntsville at night after we all were done with work, My wife was from Timmins and are around the same age and attended the same schools, I met my wife in Toronto long after meeting the now famous Shania Twain. I often wonder if she would remember me. And you know I think she would,l
