Lanark County, Ontario – Located in Purdons Conservation Area in the Lanark Highlands is the largest colony of showy Lady’s Slipper Orchids in North America –
estimated to be more than 16,000 blooms! The colony was discovered by a local farmer Joe Purdon in the 1930’s. Along with assistance of beavers living in the area, Purdon was able to keep the local wetland in condition for the orchids to thrive. He left the land to the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority, which is now responsible for maintaining it.
Purdons Conservation area is located an hour west of Ottawa. At the site you’ll find a 400-metre boardwalk and interpretive signage for viewing, and picnic tables. The village of Lanark is 16 km north of Perth.
According to Lanark County Tourism the orchids generally bloom from mid-June until early July. You can call the bloom hotline starting June 1 at 613-259-5307 ext. 500 .
