Blow Me Down – one of many Cool Names for Communities in Newfoundland

Strange NamesNewfoundland and Labrador – Newfoundland has some of the strangest place names in the world. The village of ‘Blow me Down’ was named by Captain Cook, who circumvented and chartered NFLD, and wintered on the west coast. The west coast village of Lark Harbour was named for his ship, H.M.S. Lark. There is also a Blow Me Down Provincial Park, which is on a peninsula between Lark and York Harbours. There is also a Blow-Me-Down Mountain Trail that crosses the Blow Me Down Mountains west of Corner Brook.

Some other favorite strange names for communities in Newfoundland include: Cupids, Conception Bay, Cow Head, Heart’s Desire, Heart’s Content, Nick’s Nose Cove, Come-By- Chance, Pothead, Dildo, Witless Bay and Square Islands.
