The Yukon Quest - The toughest sled dog race in the world

Whitehorse - It doesn't get much cooler - imagine gripping your mittens to a simple wooden sled as a team of 14 dogs pull you madly across 1000 miles of ice and snow, through blizzards, against 100-mile-an-hour winds, and with temperatures dropping as low as -60 C. Better yet, schedule a visit to the Canadian north to stay in a nice warm hotel and go out and watch the climax of this amazing event. The Yukon Quest is considered the toughest sled dog race in the world. The course stretches from Fairbanks in Alaska across the US/Canada border to the city of Whitehorse, following the historic route of the Klondike gold rush, with dogs descended from the canine of that era. The race starts in Fairbanks, Alaska in early February and the teams should reach Whitehorse in the Yukon, in 10 to 13 days. There should be celebrating - the first 15 teams share $125,000 US in winnings.

Where: Whitehorse is located on the Alaska Hwy between Dawson Creek, Brititish Columbia (1430 km) and and Fairbanks, Alaska (970 km.) The town sits on the western bank of the Yukon River. It's compact and easy to explore on foot.
