10 million world-famous Malpeque Oysters are harvested in P.E.I. each year

Photography Lucy Izon Malpeque Bay, P.E.I. - As you follow P.E.I.'s Blue Heron scenic drive route west from Prince Edward Island National Park watch for spots to indulge in succulent seafood. This route will take you by the large shallow Malpeque Bay, which is filled with oyster farms. The Malpeque Oyster was judged the world's tastest oyster at the Paris exhibition in 1900. It continues to be recognized as one of the world's finest, known for a clean sharp taste. Enviroment Canada rears millions of Malpeque Oyster larvae, then they are cultivated in tidal bays and estuaries and planted in growing beds where they mature for five years. 10 km north of the town of Summerside, the small village of Tyne Valley celebrates the Malpeque Oysters with a three-day festival in early August, featuring fried oysters, fiddling, dancing, etc. P.E.I.
