 Cavendish, P.E.I. - Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Cavendish in 1874. The setting she chose as inspiration for her touching fictional story was a local white and green farm house, which was the home of cousins of her grandfather. Today this house is a National Heritage Site and part of Prince Edward Island National Park. It's open to the public throughout the summer. Explore exhibits inside, wander around the lush gardens or stroll along the novel's 'Lover's Lane'. Montgomery is buried in a local graveyard. Published in 1908 (after she submitted the manuscript 16 times), Anne of Green Gables has now been translated into 16 languages and an estimated 50 million copies have been sold worldwide. Where: Joined to New Brunswick by the 12.9 km Confederation Bridge, Canada's smallest province, rolling rural Prince Edward Island, is just 225 km wide.
