What Makes Canada Cool?
Thunder Bay's historic Fort William was laid out in the design of the Union Jack Flag

Thunder Bay, Ontario - Thunder Bay's Fort William Historical Park was once the largest fur trading post in the world. Today you can wander through more than 40 historic buildings, many staffed with interperters dress in period clothing. This was the headquarters for the North West Fur Trading Company from 1803 to 1821, and that era is recreated and celebrated each summer in early July with the five-day 'Great Rendezvous' festival. One of the most unique aspects of the fort is that viewed from above (and when it was built only the birds could do this), its courtyard pathways were laid out in the design of the Union Jack Flag.

Where: Thunder Bay sits on the north shore of Lake Superior (the world's largest body of fresh water) half way between Winnipeg and Sault Ste Marie. About 45 km from town, on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Superior, is Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. It was voted one of the 'Seven Wonders of Canada' by viewers of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Visitors can swim, fish, camp, hike and watch for wildlife from fox to moose.
