What Makes Canada Cool?
At 13 Avril Lavigne won a radio contest to preform with Shania Twain

Napanee, Ontario - At the age of 13 Avril Lavigne had an extraordinary opportunity. She was born in Belleville, Ontario (Sept 27, 1984), and moved with her family to the Victorian era town of Napanee at the age of five. Like many in small-town Ontario, she sang in a church choir ,and she also competed in country music at local fairgrounds. Then at 13 she won a trip to Ottawa in a radio show contest, and got to perform a duet with country music star Shania Twain (from Timmins, Ontario). After phenomenal success at a young age, she preformed for the world at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin Italy.

Where: Avril's hometown of Napanee is located along the 401 highway, half-way between Kingston and Belleville. Throughout the summer there are outdoor concerts every Sunday at the town's waterfront Millennium Pavillion, and there’s a traditional country fair in early August.
