 Icefields Parkway, Jasper National Park, Alberta - The most popular stop along the spectacular 229 km (142 m) Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is the Columbia Icefield, which is six times larger than Manhattan. Seven glaciers flow from it, with the 6-km (4-mile) Athabasca Glacier reaching right down towards the highway like a giant white finger, dripping melting water from snow that fell up to 150 years ago.To the right you'll see the Snow Dome, the hydrographic apex of North America. Meltwater from it flows to the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Stop at the Interpretation Centre and you can learn about icefields and glaciers, arrange one-hour 'Snow Explorer' on the Athabasca Glacier, and you can pick up a few bottles of pure Glacier Water. Other great stops great stops along the Icefields Parkway include Peyto Lake, which has amazing brilliant blue glacier water, and the Weeping Wall where sheets of water dramatically spill over a wide cliff face. You can easily drive yourself, or take a tour/shuttle from Banff, Lake Louise or Jasper.
